You land, you check in, you drop your bag, you fall into the bed the hotel has prepared for you — and then you lie there, wide awake, staring at a ceiling that is not yours.
The bed is comfortable. The room is dark. The temperature is fine. You were tired on the plane. And yet sleep will not come. Somewhere around 3 a.m. you realize you have been awake for hours, and you begin the quiet, miserable calculation of how little rest you will have to carry you through tomorrow.
If this is you, you are not alone. The first night in a strange place is, for most human beings, a bad night of sleep. This is not a personal failing. It is not a weakness. It is a feature of the human nervous system, and it has a name.
Scientists who study sleep have a term for what happens to you in a hotel room: they call it the first-night effect. Across study after study, people who sleep in an unfamiliar setting show measurably worse sleep on the first night — longer time to fall asleep, more waking, less deep sleep, lighter sleep overall — even when the bed is excellent and the room is perfectly controlled.
The reason is ancient and protective. Your brain, faced with a new environment, does not fully trust it. One of your brain's hemispheres, the left, remains in a lighter, more watchful stage of sleep on that first night — a kind of night watch — while the other rests more deeply. It is your nervous system, inherited from ancestors who slept in places that were not always safe, keeping one ear open for threat in a place it has never been before.
This is the same reason you sleep fine in your own bed with the television on, but lie awake in a silent hotel room listening to the hum of the air conditioner. Your brain knows the sounds of home. It does not yet know the sounds of here.
The first-night effect is not the only thing working against you. Travel itself is a series of small shocks to the system that conspire against sleep:
— Time zone shifts disrupt your circadian rhythm, the internal clock that tells your body when to be awake and when to sleep. Here is the part that most people never hear: almost everything that makes hotel sleep bad is fixable — or at least improvable. The first-night effect cannot be entirely eliminated, but it can be dramatically reduced. The other factors — light, temperature, routine, food, alcohol, stress — are within your control to a degree that will surprise you.
This guide is built to give you that control. It is practical, not preachy. It does not ask you to be a monk on the road. It asks you to understand a few simple things about how sleep works, and to do a few simple things, before and during your stay, that let your body do what it already knows how to do — rest — even in a room that is not yours.
You will not sleep perfectly every night away from home. No one does. But you can sleep well enough, often enough, that travel stops being something you dread for its cost to your rest, and becomes what it should be: a change of scene that leaves you refreshed instead of depleted.
The next chapter begins with the single most powerful lever you have — the one that almost no traveler uses well. It is the light.
Chapter 02
Of all the forces that govern your sleep, none is more powerful than light. Light is the master signal your body uses to know when to be awake and when to sleep. More than any pill, more than any routine, more than any pillow you buy, the light you let in — and the light you keep out — determines how well you sleep.
And almost no traveler uses it deliberately. Once you do, you will be amazed at the difference.
Your body runs on an internal clock, the circadian rhythm, that roughly follows a 24-hour cycle. That clock is not set by willpower. It is set, mostly, by light.
When bright light enters your eyes in the morning, it tells your brain: the day has begun. Cortisol rises, alertness builds, and the clock starts counting down toward melatonin — the sleep hormone — being released roughly fourteen to sixteen hours later. When light dims in the evening, melatonin begins to rise, and your body prepares for sleep.
The problem with travel is that this system, which works beautifully in the predictable rhythm of home, gets scrambled on the road. You arrive in a new time zone and your body is still on the old one. You spend the day indoors, in meetings or dim rooms, and your clock gets no clear signal. You stare at your phone in the hotel bed, bathing your eyes in blue light at exactly the hour your body needs darkness, and you push your sleep later without knowing it.
The single most effective thing you can do to fix your sleep when you travel — especially across time zones — is to get bright light in your eyes in the morning of the place you have traveled to.
Within an hour of waking, get outside. Not a window — outside. Sunlight, even on a cloudy day, is many times brighter than indoor light, and it is the brightness your clock needs. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough. A walk, a coffee on a terrace, a breakfast by a window with the sun coming in. Do this every morning of your trip, at the local morning hour, and your clock will begin to shift to local time far faster than it would on its own.
If you have crossed many time zones and wake in the middle of the local night, do not turn on the overhead light. Keep it dark. The light you want is the light of the local morning — and only that. Light in the middle of the local night tells your body it is daytime at home, which is exactly the confusion you are trying to undo.
The other half of the lever is darkness. Melatonin, the hormone that prepares your body for sleep, begins to rise when the eyes register dimming light. The problem in a hotel room is that nothing dims on its own. The lights stay bright until you switch them off. The phone glows. The alarm clock shines. The curtain leaks the parking-lot light.
You can fix this. In the two hours before you want to sleep:
— Dim the room. Turn off overhead lights. Use a single bedside lamp, or the bathroom light with the door cracked. Aim for the feeling of dusk, not daytime. — Put the screens down, or change them. If you must use your phone, turn on the night-shift or blue-light filter and turn the brightness all the way down. Better still, read a paper book or a downloaded article in dark mode. — Black out the room. Before you settle in, check the curtains. Many hotel curtains leak light at the seam. If they do, use the clips or the trouser hanger from the closet to pin them shut, or hang a towel over the gap. A small eye mask, packed once and reused for years, is the single best travel sleep investment you can make.
There is one light mistake that ruins more hotel sleep than any other: the late-night phone in bed. The blue-rich light of a phone screen, held close to the face, is interpreted by your brain as daylight. It suppresses melatonin, pushes your sleep window later, and leaves you lying awake wondering why you cannot sleep — when the answer is in your own hand.
You do not have to give up your phone at night. But if you want to sleep well away from home, give it up for the last hour before sleep, or filter it heavily and keep it across the room, not in your face. The sleep you gain is worth the small discipline.
Light is the switch. Learn to use it — bright local mornings, dim local evenings, a dark room — and you will have mastered the lever that does more for travel sleep than anything else in this guide.
Chapter 03
Your body will not fully let go into sleep in a place it does not recognize as safe and familiar. The first-night effect is, at its root, a vigilance response — your nervous system keeping watch in an unknown environment. The good news is that vigilance can be quieted, and the room itself is where much of that quieting happens.
You do not need a perfect room. You need a room that is cool enough, dark enough, quiet enough, and predictable enough that your body can stop listening for what might be wrong.
This is the one most people get backwards. A warm hotel room feels cozy, and so travelers often crank the heat up before bed. But the body needs to cool to fall asleep and stay asleep. Core temperature drops as you enter deep sleep; a warm room fights that drop and keeps you in lighter, more fragile sleep all night.
The ideal sleeping temperature for most people is cool — somewhere between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit (16 to 19 degrees Celsius). When you arrive, set the thermostat lower than you would at home. A room that feels slightly cool when you get in, under the covers, is the room that will let you sleep deepest.
If the room is cold and the bed has too many heavy blankets, remove layers until you are comfortable. If it is too warm and you cannot control it, a cool shower before bed, light sleepwear, and keeping the curtain closed against afternoon sun will all help.
As you learned in the last chapter, melatonin needs darkness. Most hotel rooms are not as dark as they look at a glance. The sources of unwanted light are many: the gap in the curtains, the blue glow of the alarm clock, the standby light on the television, the glow under the door from the hallway, the emergency exit sign.
Walk the room before you settle in and hunt these down. Turn the alarm clock to face the wall or dim it. Cover the standby lights with a folded tissue and a piece of tape, or with the hotel's notepad. Pin the curtains shut. If the hallway light leaks under the door, roll a towel into the gap. Add an eye mask, and you have done more than most travelers ever do.
The result is a room that lets your body believe it is actually night — which is the only state in which it will give you deep, restorative sleep.
Silence is not your friend in a hotel. In perfect silence, every new sound — the elevator down the hall, the ice machine, the neighbor's TV, a door closing three rooms away — registers as a possible signal, and your brain wakes you to assess it. What you want is not silence. You want a steady, predictable sound floor that covers the unpredictable sounds.
A fan running on low, or the room's air conditioner on a constant setting (not "auto," which cycles on and off and creates a silence-then-roar pattern), provides a consistent backdrop. Many travelers swear by a white-noise app or a small travel sound machine; a rainfall or brown-noise track, played quietly through your phone or a small speaker, does the work of the air conditioner when the room is too cold to run it.
Earplugs are the other half of the answer. Foam earplugs, properly inserted (rolled tight, inserted, held in place while they expand), reduce enough of the random sounds of a hotel to keep you under. They take a night or two to get used to; once you do, you will not travel without them.
Here is the part that addresses the first-night effect directly: give your body a sensory signal that is the same as home.
The most powerful of these is scent. Smell is wired directly to the parts of the brain that govern vigilance and memory, and a familiar scent in an unfamiliar room measurably reduces the first-night effect in sleep studies. Bring a small bottle of the scent you use at home — a pillow spray, a drop of lavender on a tissue tucked near the pillow, whatever you already associate with your own bed — and use it the same way you do at home. The room still looks strange. But a part of your body recognizes it, and that is enough to let the watchfulness soften.
A familiar pillowcase, brought from home, does the same work through touch. The hotel pillow itself may be fine, but the case is hotel-laundered, hotel-smelling, hotel-rough. Your own pillowcase, slipped over the hotel pillow, is a small piece of home that your face recognizes the moment it lands.
You do not need to do all of this every night. But a five-minute room setup when you arrive pays dividends every night of your stay:
— Set the thermostat cool. — Close and pin the curtains; check the gaps. — Dim or cover the standby lights. — Decide your sound strategy — air conditioner, app, or earplugs — and set it ready. — Lay out your own scent, your own pillowcase if you brought one, and the sleepwear you will actually wear.
A room set up this way is no longer a strange room. It is a room that has been made, in five small ways, into a place your body can rest. That is the foundation everything else in this guide rests on.
Chapter 04
A body does not fall asleep on command. It falls asleep on cue — when a series of signals, repeated over time, tell it that the moment for sleep has arrived. At home, this happens almost without your noticing. The house gets quiet, the lights go down, the same things happen in the same order, and sleep comes as if by itself.
Travel breaks the bridge. In a hotel, nothing repeats. You eat at odd hours, you do unfamiliar things, you climb into an unfamiliar bed at whatever time you finally stop. The cues are gone, and so your body, which was waiting for the cues, lies awake wondering what it is supposed to do now.
The fix is to rebuild a bridge — a simple, repeatable routine that you carry with you and perform the same way each night, so your body has its signal even in a place it does not know.
The nervous system is a prediction machine. It is constantly scanning for patterns. When the same sequence of events precedes sleep, night after night, the brain learns that sequence as the cue to begin the descent into sleep. Melatonin starts to rise before you get into bed, because your body has learned that the routine means sleep is coming.
This is why the person who does the same wind-down every night at home falls asleep in minutes, while the person who does something different every night lies awake for an hour. It is not a difference in sleep ability. It is a difference in cueing.
When you travel, the cues of home are gone. The only way to replace them is to carry a small, portable version of your routine with you and perform it faithfully. It does not need to be long. It needs to be the same.
Design a wind-down that you can do anywhere, in under thirty minutes, with what fits in a carry-on. The content matters less than the repetition. A simple, effective structure:
— Step one: a clear transition. Do something that marks the end of the day's work and the start of the night. A shower is ideal — the warm water and the subsequent cooling of the body are themselves a sleep cue. A change of clothes, a cup of tea, a few minutes of stretching all work. The point is the boundary. — Step two: dim the light. Already covered in Chapter 2. Bring the room down to dusk. — Step three: a single quiet activity. Reading is the classic for a reason. A paper book is best; a screen in dark mode is acceptable if filtered. Avoid anything that pulls you into planning the next day, rehashing the day just passed, or doom-scrolling the news. The activity should be absorbing enough to quiet the mind but not stimulating enough to wake it. — Step four: a brief, fixed close. The same small thing each night. A few slow breaths. A one-line gratitude. A prayer, if you pray. A single page of a journal. Something short, something repeated, something that says: the day is done.
Do these four steps in the same order, every night, wherever you are. Within two or three nights your body will begin to respond to the sequence the way it responds to the routine at home — sleep will start to come on cue.
Some common travel habits destroy the bridge before it is built. The most common:
— Working in bed. If your brain learns that the bed is a place for email, spreadsheets, and worry, it will not let go there at night. Keep the bed for sleep and intimacy. Work at the desk, or in the lobby, or anywhere else. — The "I'll just check one thing" phone. One check becomes twenty minutes of blue light and cortisol. Leave the phone across the room, charging, for the wind-down and the night. — Planning tomorrow in bed. The mind, asked to plan, will plan — and planning is an activation task, not a sleep task. If you need to plan, do it before the wind-down, write it down, and close the notebook. In bed, the plan is finished. — Alcohol as a wind-down. A drink feels like it helps, and it does shorten the time to fall asleep. But alcohol fragments the second half of the night badly, suppresses REM sleep, and leaves you waking unrefreshed at 4 a.m. It is not a sleep aid. It is a sleep thief that disguises itself as a friend.
When you have crossed time zones, the routine becomes even more important, because it is the anchor your body still recognizes when the clock on the wall says something different. Perform the wind-down at the local bedtime, even if your body thinks it is the middle of the afternoon. The routine, the dark room, and the morning light (from Chapter 2) together will pull your clock into local time far faster than waiting for it to adjust on its own.
The bridge is the thing. Build it small, build it portable, and cross it the same way every night. Sleep will meet you on the other side.
Chapter 05
Light sets the clock, the room sets the stage, the routine sets the cue. But there is a fourth layer, and it is the one most travelers ignore entirely: what you put into your body during the day determines what your body is able to do at night.
You can do everything in the first four chapters perfectly and still sleep badly if you are dehydrated, caffeinated past noon, three glasses of wine in, and eating a heavy restaurant meal at 10 p.m. The body that sleeps is the same body that ate, drank, and moved all day. This chapter is about the levers that body hands you.
Caffeine is the most underestimated sleep disruptor on the road. The cup of coffee that feels like it wears off by lunch does not, in your body, wear off by lunch. Caffeine has a half-life of roughly five to six hours, which means that a coffee at 2 p.m. still has half of its stimulant effect in your bloodstream at 8 p.m., and a quarter of it at midnight.
The result is that afternoon coffee — the airport latte, the post-lunch espresso, the tea at the 4 p.m. meeting — quietly blocks the adenosine receptors that build your sleep pressure, and you lie awake wondering why you cannot drift off, even though you are tired.
The rule that works: no caffeine after about 2 p.m. If you are traveling east across many time zones and need caffeine in the local morning to force your clock onto local time, that is fine — but keep it in the local morning, not the local afternoon. The sleep you protect tonight is worth far more than the alertness you borrowed this afternoon.
This is the one travelers resist most, because a drink at the end of a travel day feels earned, relaxing, and sleep-inducing. And it is — for the first hour.
What alcohol actually does to sleep is well documented and grim. It shortens the time to fall asleep, which is why it feels helpful. But it then fragments the second half of the night badly, suppresses REM sleep, worsens snoring and sleep apnea, and leaves you waking in the small hours, unrefreshed, often unable to get back to sleep. The net effect is that a night "helped" by alcohol is a worse night of sleep than a sober one, by every measure that matters.
If sleep is your priority, keep alcohol to one drink, with food, early in the evening — or none. The sleep you gain is real, and you will feel it in the morning.
A heavy meal close to bedtime forces your body to digest when it should be descending into sleep. Digestion raises core temperature, increases heart rate, and triggers acid reflux when you lie flat — all of which fragment sleep.
If you have a late dinner on the road, keep it moderate, and leave at least two to three hours between the end of the meal and the start of the wind-down. If you must eat late, favor protein and vegetables over heavy fats and large portions, and avoid anything spicy if you are prone to reflux.
The reverse problem — going to bed hungry — also disrupts sleep. A small snack an hour before bed, especially one with a little complex carbohydrate and protein (a piece of toast with peanut butter, a small bowl of oatmeal, a handful of nuts), can steady blood sugar through the night and prevent the 3 a.m. wake that low blood sugar triggers.
Travel dehydrates you — flights, air conditioning, altitude, inconsistent water intake — and dehydration raises cortisol, thickens blood, and leaves you feeling vaguely unwell in a way that interferes with sleep. Most travelers are chronically behind on water from the moment they leave home.
Drink water steadily through the day, more than you think you need, and reduce it in the last two hours before bed so you are not waking to use the bathroom. A glass on the nightstand for the dry hotel air is fine; chugging a liter at 11 p.m. is not.
The sedentary travel day — car, plane, meeting, dinner, bed — leaves the body tired in the wrong way: physically stagnant, mentally wired. The body that sleeps best is the body that has moved.
You do not need a workout. You need movement. A twenty-minute walk, ideally outside (which also gets you the morning light of Chapter 2), is enough to discharge the cortisol of the day, warm and loosen the muscles, and build the kind of healthy fatigue that invites deep sleep. A few minutes of stretching before the wind-down does the same for a body that has been sitting for hours.
Avoid hard exercise in the three hours before bed; it raises core temperature and heart rate at exactly the wrong time. Morning or afternoon movement is the friend of sleep; late-night training is its enemy.
Sleep away from home is the product of a body that is cool, dark, and quiet (the room), cued (the routine), clock-set (the light), and clean (the food, drink, and movement). Get the first three right and you will sleep okay. Get all four right and you will sleep, in most hotel rooms, almost as well as you do at home.
That is not a small thing. It is the difference between a trip that depletes you and a trip that restores you.
Chapter 06
You will do everything in this guide right, and there will still be nights when you wake at 3 a.m. in a hotel room, far from home, and cannot get back to sleep. The room is dark, the routine was good, the day was fine — and yet here you are, wide awake, and the harder you try, the further sleep retreats.
This chapter is for that moment. Because what you do at 3 a.m. determines whether the night is mostly lost or mostly saved — and almost everyone does the wrong thing.
A night waking is not a failure. It is not evidence that you have insomnia, that the trip is doomed, that you are broken. Human sleep is not a single uninterrupted block. A normal night of sleep includes several brief wake-ups, most of which you do not remember. The difference at home is that you roll over and fall back asleep in minutes, and so you never register them.
In a hotel, the first-night effect keeps you in lighter sleep, so you are more likely to wake fully, and the unfamiliarity of the room makes it harder to drop back. The waking feels bigger than it is because the setting makes it bigger. It is still, in most cases, a normal waking that a few simple moves will resolve.
The worst thing you can do at 3 a.m. is the thing almost everyone does: stay in bed, tense, trying to force sleep, and watch the clock.
Staying in bed awake for long stretches trains the brain to associate the bed with wakefulness and frustration rather than sleep. Clock-watching activates the calculating, planning mind — "if I fall asleep now I will get three hours" — which is the opposite of the state sleep needs. And the frustration itself raises the very arousal that is keeping you awake. You are, in effect, practicing being awake in bed, which is the last thing you want to practice.
Sleep clinicians have a simple rule for this moment: if you have been awake for roughly twenty minutes and sleep is not coming, get out of bed.
Leave the bedroom. Go to another part of the room, or the sitting area, or a chair. Keep the light low — a single dim lamp, not the overhead. Do something quiet and not stimulating: read a paper book, do a few slow stretches, listen to a calm audio track. Do not look at your phone. Do not check the time. Do not work. When you feel the heaviness of sleep returning — the eyes drooping, the thoughts slowing — go back to bed.
This is not punishment. It is retraining. You are teaching the brain that the bed is for sleep, and that being awake is something that happens elsewhere. Done consistently, it shortens the wake and protects the nights that follow.
A few techniques help specifically in the 3 a.m. waking:
— Slow breathing. A simple 4-7-8 breath — inhale for four counts, hold for seven, exhale for eight — slows the heart and shifts the nervous system out of alert. It sounds too simple to work. It works. — Body scan. Starting at the feet and slowly moving attention up the body, noticing and releasing each part, gives the mind a low-stimulation task that lets sleep creep back in. The goal is not to relax perfectly; it is to occupy the mind with something other than the clock. — Mental "neutral" task. Think of a category and list items in your head: types of trees, countries in Africa, words that start with "s." The task must be engaging enough to hold attention but not so engaging it wakes you. Boring is the point. — The "parking lot" for worry. If a real worry has you awake, keep a small notebook by the bed. Write the worry down — one line — and tell yourself you will handle it in the morning. The act of externalizing it, onto the page, often releases the mind's grip on it enough for sleep to return.
One special case: if you have crossed many time zones, a 3 a.m. local waking may simply be your body's clock telling you it is the middle of the day at home. In that case, do not fight it hard. Keep the room dark, do a quiet activity in low light, and let the body rest even if it does not sleep. The morning light and the local routine of the next days will pull the clock forward. Forcing it, with caffeine or bright light at 3 a.m., only deepens the confusion.
If the 3 a.m. waking is occasional, this is travel. If it is every night, for weeks, regardless of where you sleep — home or away — it may have become a pattern that deserves more support. Chronic insomnia, defined as difficulty falling or staying asleep three or more nights a week for three months or more, is common, it is real, and it is treatable. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the gold-standard treatment, more effective than medication in the long run. If this is you, a few sessions with a sleep-trained clinician can change your relationship with sleep for the rest of your life.
But for the traveler waking once, in a hotel, far from home, the answer is almost always simpler: get up if you need to, keep it dark and quiet, let the body find its way back. Most nights, it will. And the night you lose is just a night — not a verdict on you, not a prediction of the trip, not a thing you did wrong.
Sleep is generous. It comes back, if you let it. Let it.

This is what to pack, once, and keep packed between trips. It fits in a small bag and will pay for itself in better sleep within one journey:
— Eye mask. The single highest-value item. A contoured mask that does not press on the eyes is ideal. It turns any hotel room into a dark room, instantly. — Earplugs. Foam, disposable, a fresh pair each trip. Or reusable silicone if you prefer. They take two nights to get used to and then become indispensable. — A familiar scent. A small pillow spray or a bottle of essential oil you already use at home. Lavender is well-studied for sleep, but the right scent is the one you associate with your own bed. — Your own pillowcase. Slipped over the hotel pillow. The face knows its own fabric. — A sleep app or small sound machine. A white-noise, brown-noise, or rainfall track you have already used at home. Familiar sound is a cue; novel sound is an alarm. — A small notebook and pen. The parking lot for 3 a.m. worries. Writing them down lets the mind release them. — Blue-light filter. On your phone and laptop, set to come on automatically after sunset. If your devices do not have a built-in filter, a free app does the same thing. — A book. Paper, ideally. The reliable, screen-free companion to the wind-down.
None of this is expensive. None of it is exotic. Together, they are the difference between a traveler who dreads hotel nights and a traveler who rests.
A few decisions before you leave shape every night of the trip:
— Choose the room if you can. Ask for a room away from the elevator, the ice machine, and the street-facing wall if traffic is loud. Higher floors are usually quieter. A room with a window you can open is a gift if the climate allows. — Set your clock before you go. If you are crossing time zones, begin shifting your sleep and meal times toward the destination a few days early, an hour or two a day. Even partial pre-adaptation makes the first days easier. — Plan the first morning. Decide now that you will get outside for light the first morning you arrive. It is the single highest-leverage act for beating jet lag, and the one most travelers skip because they are tired. — Pack the kit. Do it the night before, not in the rush of departure. A kit you have to assemble at 1 a.m. in the hotel is a kit you will not use.
When you arrive at the hotel, before you unpack your clothes, take five minutes to set the room:
1. Set the thermostat cool — 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Close and pin the curtains; check for light leaks. 3. Dim or cover the standby lights. 4. Set up your sound — app, machine, or air conditioner on constant. 5. Place your eye mask, earplugs, and scent on the nightstand. 6. Lay your own pillowcase on the pillow.
Five minutes. From that point on, the room is not a strange room. It is a room prepared for sleep, and the rest of the stay is easier because of it.
Each night, the same wind-down, in the same order:
— A clear transition (shower, tea, stretch). — Dim the light. — A single quiet activity (reading, not screens). — A fixed, brief close (a few breaths, a line of gratitude, a prayer).
The same every night, everywhere. The body learns the bridge and meets you on the other side.
Each morning, light:
— Get outside within an hour of waking. — Twenty to thirty minutes of bright, local morning light. — Move a little if you can — a walk does double duty.
This single habit, repeated every day of the trip, is what turns the local clock from your enemy into your friend, and what makes the second, third, and fourth nights of a trip better than the first.
Here is the thing to carry with you, more than any item on the list: sleep is not a battle to be won. It is a process to be supported. The traveler who rests well is not the traveler who fights hardest to sleep. It is the traveler who has set the conditions — the light, the room, the routine, the body — and then trusted the body to do what it was built to do.
You will have a bad night now and then. Everyone does, at home and away. A bad night is not a failure and not a verdict. It is a night. The next night, with the conditions right, sleep will come back.
Travel is one of the great gifts of a human life — new places, new people, new parts of yourself you only meet away from home. It should not cost you your rest. With a little understanding and a few small habits, it does not have to.
